Imagine a lush, vibrant landscape nestled in Indonesia's vast archipeligo. North Sumatra is home to breathtaking jungles, ancient traditions, and thriving communities. Yet beneath this natural beauty lies a hidden health crisis urgently demanding attention.
ATOVA International is stepping up to confront this challenge head-on with our groundbreaking initiative, 'Fit for the Future.' This exciting program combines hands-on education, active community involvement, and life-changing interventions to create healthier, stronger communities in one of Indonesia's most captivating regions.
Indonesia's Silent Epidemic
Indonesia is facing a major health emergency. Diabetes affects an astonishing 100 million people nationwide (WHO, 2022), while heart disease contributes to around 30% of all deaths (Ministry of Health Indonesia, 2022). Tragically, many of these deaths are entirely preventable, often stemming from limited health awareness and insufficient physical activity.
Shockingly, Indonesian schools provide just 60-90 minutes per week of physical education, far below the international recommendation of at least 150 minutes (WHO, 2020). This shortfall contributes to a broader cultural disconnect from regular exercise, perpetuating health challenges into adulthood.
Zooming into North Sumatra, the numbers paint a troubling picture: 1.2 million adults live with diabetes, while approximately 30% of the population suffers from obesity or being overweight (Indonesian Ministry of Health, 2022). This region, roughly the size of Belgium, urgently needs sustainable solutions.
Revolutionizing Fitness: Building a New Culture

At ATOVA, we're revolutionising local attitudes toward health by making fitness fun, accessible and inspiring. 'Fit for the Future' introduces regular sessions of High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), aerobics, dynamic circuit sessions, and energetic group runs. These activities are more than exercise, they're events that build community spirit, encourage teamwork, and gradually transform local perceptions of fitness.
Our sesssions, tailored for all levels, empower individuals to experience firsthand the incredible benefits of regular exercise, from increased energy and mental clarity to reduced risk of chronic diseases.

Lifesaving Skills: First Aid at Your Fingertips
Another essential component of our initiative is providing critical first aid training. Many injuries and deaths in North Sumatra are preventable yet occur due to a lack of immediate medical intervention. Research by the International federation of Red Cross and Red Cresent Societies reveals that effective first aid can dramatically decrease fatalities and serious injuries during emergencies such as drowning and accidents (IFRC, 2021). The World Health Organisation also stresses the importance of rapid, skilled first aid in reducing long-term disabilities (WHO, 2021).
Through 'Fit for the Future' community members learn these essential skills, empowering them to act swiftly and confidently in crisis situations, potentially saving countless lives.

Nourishing the Future: Nutrition Education
Good health begins at a young age, which is why we're placing nutritional education at the core of local school curricula. Through interactive lessons, practical cooking sessions, and educational games, children gain invaluable knowledge about balanced diets and healthy living. These lessons ripple out from classrooms to families and communities, creating sustainable change in eating habits and tackling chronic health issues like diabetes right from childhood.
