WHAT IT MEANS TO SERVE
ATOVA Volunteers don’t just join a program, they join a mission. You’ll work shoulder to shoulder with our Indonesian team, teaching, leading, and empowering communities thorugh real-world projects in education, conservation, and health.
This isn’t a gap year. It’s a transformation, of self, of purpose, and of the communities you serve.
BALI - INDONESIA:
Teach English through the Empowerment Through Education (ETE) program, train with the ATOVA Ranger Training Corps (ARTC) in remote habitats and ecosystems or support the Fit for the Future health and fitness initiative, building stronger, healthier schools and communities.
Each placement blends fieldwork, cultural immersion, and personal growth in equal measure.

From the moment you sign up until the day you return home, you’ll have your own dedicated Volunteer Coordinator, an experienced member of the ATOVA team who’ll guide you every step of the way. Whether it’s a quick message or a call, your coordinator is always there to support, advise, and help you make the most of your journey.

Once you’ve confirmed your placement, your Volunteer Coordinator will send you our comprehensive Volunteer Handbook, everything you need to know before you depart, from preparation checklists to cultural insights and what to expect on the ground.

Travel checklist
Whether it’s your first time abroad or your tenth, it’s always worth double-checking you’ve got everything you need. We’ll provide you with a personalised travel checklist, covering all the essential kit and equipment for life on placement, so you can arrive confident, prepared, and ready to make a difference.

We understand that adventures abroad can feel daunting for family members back home. That’s why we provide a detailed information pack for parents and guardians, giving them a clear picture of your placement, where you’ll be, what you’ll be doing, and how to stay in touch throughout your journey.

DURING YOUR PLACEMENT

24/7 IN COUNTRY SUPPORT
We operate a dedicated Duty Roster to ensure there’s always a highly trained professional available, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, throughout your placement. No matter where you are or what time it is, help and guidance are only ever a phone call away.

Arrival & Departure
When you arrive, a member of our team will be there to meet you at the airport and guide you to your ATOVA transport, which will take you and your fellow volunteers to your induction training venue. At the end of your placement, we’ll make sure you get back to the airport safely, closing your journey just as it began: supported every step of the way.

Everything you need, Provided
We work hard to make your experience as smooth and stress-free as possible. That’s why we supply all the tools, equipment, and resources you’ll need to deliver your program while on placement. It’s just one less thing to worry about, so you can focus on making an impact.

Authentic Food, Every Day
As part of our commitment to redefining the volunteer experience, we provide three freshly prepared meals a day for all volunteers throughout their entire stay. You’ll enjoy authentic Indonesian cuisine, lovingly cooked by local people, a chance to experience the true taste of Indonesia while supporting the communities you serve.

As part of our commitment to genuine cultural exchange, all volunteers stay in or near our field bases, within the very communities we serve. Accommodation is safe, shared, and simple, dormitory-style living that allows you to connect with your fellow volunteers and experience daily life as the local community does.

In country training
When you arrive in Indonesia, you’ll take part in our comprehensive induction and training course, designed to prepare you for life and work in the field. You’ll explore a wide range of topics, from climate change and conservation to leadership, communication, and Indonesian culture, giving you the knowledge and confidence to make a meaningful impact from day one.

Leadership & Team building
Becoming an active global citizen means learning how to inspire growth and change in others. That’s why every ATOVA volunteer takes part in comprehensive leadership and team-building training, designed to strengthen collaboration, communication, and confidence within your team. These sessions prepare you not just to contribute, but to lead with purpose.

Weekly 1-2-1s
Your wellbeing matters to us. To make sure you’re happy, healthy, and comfortable throughout your placement, our Program Leaders hold weekly one-to-one check-ins with every volunteer. These sessions give you a space to reflect, ask questions, and get the support you need, whenever you need it.

When you return home, your Volunteer Coordinator will reach out to provide continued guidance and support as you prepare for your Action @ Home project. We know that your journey doesn’t end when your plane lands, it evolves into something even greater.

Action @ hOME
Once you’ve settled back into life at home, you’ll have the chance to continue making a difference through your Action @ Home project. Working alongside your Volunteer Coordinator, you’ll design and lead an initiative that creates real impact, whether that’s tackling a local issue, fundraising to support ATOVA’s work, or serving as a Volunteer Ambassador to inspire the next generation.

cERTIFICATE & rEFERENCE LETTER
Volunteers who complete their Action @ Home project receive an official ATOVA Certificate of Completion and a personalised reference letter, recognising your contribution, leadership, and global impact. You’ll also gain priority recruitment for future opportunities within ATOVA.
