  • How long are the ACS placements?
    ACS placements typically last for six weeks, but we also offer flexible placements for those unable to commit to the full duration.
  • What kind of support can I expect during my placement?
    You will recieve continuous support from our in-country staff, including a dedicated volunteer coordinator. We ensure a safe and enriching experience with a high staff-to-volunteer ratio.
  • What's a typical day like for a volunteer?
    A typical day as an ATOVA volunteer is a dynamic mix of meaningful work and cultural immersion. You’ll start with a team breakfast, followed by engaging in hands-on project work, whether it’s teaching, conservation efforts, or community development. After a group lunch, the afternoon may involve workshops, mentoring, or field activities. Evenings are for reflection, preparing for the next day, and enjoying the local culture or relaxing with your team. Each day offers a fulfilling balance of service, learning, and adventure!
  • Where is the ATOVA Field Base Located?
    Our Field Base is in Kabanjahe, North Sumatra, Indonesia, serving as the hub for our operations and volunteer placements.
  • What is the ATOVA Citizen Service (ACS) Program?
    The ACS program offers immersive volunteer placements where participants contribute to impactful community projects focused on education, conservation, and community development. What really stands ACS apart from other volunteering opportunities, is that it focuses not just on international development, but also the personal development of our volunteers, leaving you better equipped to go forward into a successful and fulfilled future as an active global citizen.
  • Do I need to speak Bahasa Indonesia?
    No prior knowledge of Bahasa Indonesia is required. We offer language lessons during your placement, and our team will support you throughout. Whats more, if your on our ACS placement, you will be teamed up with an Indonesian Volunteer who can help with translation! Top Tip: Although it is not a requirement, its a good idea to learn some of the basics before you come. We reccomend the application 'DuoLingo'.
  • What does the volunteer fee cover?
    The £1800 volunteer fee covers all food, accommodation, transport, and project equipment during your placement. It also includes in-country training, 24/7 support, and a comprehensive orientation program.
  • How can I prepare for my placement?
    After booking, you'll recieve a personalized volunteer handbook, packing list, and cultural orientation to help you prepare. Your assigned volunteer coordinator will also guide you thorugh the process.
  • Why do I have to pay to volunteer?
    Travel and living expenses are a reality for any international experience. At ATOVA International, we prioritize ensureing that every donation we recieve goes directly to supporting the communities we serve. By asking our volunteers to cover their own living costs, we can dedicate 100% of donations to impactful projects. In return, we offer an unforgettable, life-changing experience that truly makes a difference in the world. Your contribution as a volunteer not only supports our mission but also enriches your own journey in ways you'll never forget!
  • What is ATOVA International?
    ATOVA International is a global charity dedicated to empowering communities through education, conservation, and sustainable devleopment programs in rural North Sumatra, Indonesia.
  • What kind of projects will I be working on?
    Volunteers work on projects related to education, conservation, and community development. This could include teaching English, supporting reforestation efforts, or helping to refurbish local schools.
  • What skills do I need to volunteer?
    No specialist skills are required! Just a willingness to learn, a positive attitude, and a passion for making a difference in the world. If your willing to get your hands dirty (sometimes literally!) we will provide all of the training and education you need to deliver our programs on the front lines of international development.
  • Can I choose my project?
    While we consider your preferences, project assignments are based on the needs of the community and your skill set. You'll be placed where you can make the most significant impact.
  • Can I extend my stay or return for another placement?
    Yes, many volunteers choose to extend their stay or return for another placement. Please speak with your volunteer coordinator to explore these options.
  • Will I have free time to explore?
    Yes! volunteers have designated free time to explore the local culture, engage in weekend adventures, and participate in activities like jungle trekking or visiting local markets.
  • Is the volunteer placement safe?
    Yes, volunteer safety is our top priority. We adhere to strict safety standards and have comprehensive support systems in place, including British Standard 8848 Guidelines.
  • What is the accomodation like?
    Volunteers stay in dormitory-style accomodations within the communities they serve. Staff may stay at the Field Base or within the community, depending on operational requirements.
  • Do I need a visa?
    Yes. Once we have recieved your full volunteer fees, your volunteer coordinator will link you up with our partners who will organise the entire visa process on your behalf, so you can get back to planning the adventure of a lifetime!
  • How do I get to the Field Base?
    We provide airport pickup upon your arrival in Medan. You'll be transported to our Field Base in Kabanjahe, where your adventure begins!
  • What should I pack for my placement?
    Your volunteer coordinator will provide a detailed packing list tailored to your specific placement and the time of year. Essentials include light clothing, sturdy footwear, and any personal items you require.
  • Can I get a reference after my placement?
    Yes absolutely! After successully completing your placement, you'll receive a certificate and a professional reference letter to support your future endeavors.
  • How do I stay connected with ATOVA after my placement?
    You'll be added to our exclusive alumni facebook group, where you can stay connected, receive updates, and access exclusive benefits.
  • What happens after my placement?
    After your placement, you'll recieve support to complete your Action @ Home Project, aimed at applying your new skills to benefit your home community. You'll also be welcomed into our alumni network!
